Menopause and the Future of HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy)
10/30/04

Women’s Health Interactive results skewed because of the average age being 62.

The time that HRT is initiated affects the outcome with respect to effects on the cardiovascular systems and dementia.
If HRT is started <5 years from menopause it is protective.
If HRT is started >5years from menopause there is an increased risk.

At anytime that HRT is initiated it helps:
Decrease incidence of colon cancer and improve the outcome for bone density.

However at any time that HRT is started it doubles the risk of thromboembolic events but the risk of thromboembolic clots is very low. It is about the same as having taken oral contraceptives.

In the diabetic population there is some evidence that low dose estrogen helps even in established disease by up regulating insulin binding
